Somalia Reunion Update 2023

We’ve met with 9-er, and I can confirm that the reunion program is now firm. Key dates are:

·         22 April – Welcome Drinks at Mercure Canberra. This is limited to 100 due to Covid restrictions remaining in place. First 100 through the door – this is unofficial, and other welcome drinks are encouraged. [Note that this will change to RMC Sgts Mess]

·         23 April – Reception @ Government House, Canberra. Hosted by His Excellency General David Hurley and Mrs Hurley.  Download this Form to Register.

·         24 April – Rest Day, sub-unit functions – such functions or events are the responsibility of sub-unit members. (Note that in the event of a Brumbies home game, we will be offered seating and participation in the Anzac Day commemoration at the ground – more to follow once game schedules are finalised).

·         25 April – Anzac Day – the Somalia Reunion Group will be leading the march, and at a minimum supported by the 1RAR Band. We are also looking at getting the catafalque from the 1RAR museum for a commemoration service on morning of Anzac Day – TBC.

Other points to note:

• Battalion Flag. We are looking at commissioning a battalion flag that will be available for signing at the reception. It will fly over Government House during the reunion period and be auctioned off. Proceeds to be distributed to 1RAR Regimental Funds, and other funds.
• Reunion Tie/Scarf. More to follow on this, but there is a plan for a reunion tie and scarves. The design is being worked on, but will be inclusive of the full nature of the reunion group.
• Reunion Wine/Port. Some form of commemorative labelling on wines and port. More to follow.
• Reunion Photo. We will take a pic of the complete reunion group that will be available after the reunion.
• Somalia Display. At the reception we plan to display photo’s and video’s of our time in Somalia. Contributions will be sought in due course.
• Reception Registration. There will be a formal registration process – probably commencing from later this year. Stand by for further instructions on that.
• Order of March – Anzac Day Parade. Still to be worked out – note that we expect veterans from HQ AFS, 1RAR Group (B Sqn 3/4 Cav, 107 Bty, BSG, supporting units), HMAS Tobruk, HMAS Jervis Bay, UNOSOM I & II, 42 Sqn RNZAF, AFP and Qantas aircrew as a minimum.
• Post Anzac Day Reception – we are looking at options presently for a site that can accommodate the complete group. Open to suggestions for the post march event.
• MUC. In the event the MUC is awarded, there will be a presentation at the reunion prior to Anzac Day – likely at reception.
