Commanding Officer of Townsville-based 1st Battalion Royal Australian Regiment, Lieutenant Colonel Andrew Gallaway, receives the arrival brief at Dili airport..

Title:

1 RAR arrival in Dili

Deep caption:

The new rotation of Australian soldiers from 1st Battalion Royal Australian Regiment touched down in Dili’s International Airport to take over security duties in Timor-Leste from the outgoing 6th Battalion Royal Australian Regiment. The respective command elements will conduct a handover period that will conclude with an official change of command ceremony, where Lieutenant Colonel Andrew Gallaway will formally assume command of the ANZAC Battle Group.

The ANZAC Battle Group will consist of five infantry companies including one from the 1st Royal New Zealand Infantry Regiment; a combat support element that encompasses the logistics support and medical elements; an aviation element; an engineering troop; and a cavalry element containing an Armoured Personnel Carrier (APC) section.

Operation Astute is the Australian Government's response to a request from the Government of Timor-Leste to assist in restoring peace to their country.

The Australian Defence Force (ADF) has deployed to Timor-Leste with a mission to assist the Government and the United Nations to bring stability, security and confidence to the Timorese to allow them to resolve their differences democratically and peacefully.

There are approximately 1000 ADF personnel currently serving in Timor-Leste. This force will remain in Timor-Leste continuing to provide a robust response capability to support the Government of Timor-Leste and the United Nations Police force.

Police from Australia and 24 other nations throughout the world provide security in Dili. The ADF provides support to these police operations as required.
